The Power of Accountability: How Accountability Aligns Actions with Intentions

Hello Igniters!

Accountability. It is one of those words that can inspire a spectrum of reactions. For, some, it resonates with clarity, empowerment, and trust. For others, it carries the weight of obligation, defensiveness and avoidance. More than a value or life practice, accountability is the keystone that ensures stability, resilience, and progress in both our personal and professional lives.

The Insight Igniter coaching question for January 27th, 2025:

“What is your relationship with the word accountability?"

This week, I invite you to reflect on your personal connection with accountability and consider how it can be a path to personal growth and enable effective leadership.

Path to Personal Growth

On a personal level, accountability is the bridge between intention and achievement. The question “What is your relationship with the word accountability?”  encourages you to explore beyond surface-level understanding to uncover how your habits, choices, values, beliefs and motivation for change shape your view of accountability. It was in a recent coaching session that this question helped action feelings of fear and inadequacy in their pursuit of writing for industry recognized publications. The client, highly-respected in their field, was stuck: “I know what I need to do. I have been given guidance, but I can’t move – I make excuses and procrastinate”. The “ah-ha” moment occurred as we explored accountability – their current understanding of the word was linked only to achieving the end goal rather than incremental achievements; they found refuge in self-criticism and avoidance. The balance of the session was spent rethinking what a system of accountability that felt supportive, not burdensome, would look like and measures of success. An accountable mindset pushes us to practice new habits, seek feedback, and refine our approach to life’s challenges. When we hold ourselves accountable and follow through on commitments, we build trust in our own abilities reinforcing our self-confidence and enabling personal growth.

Enabler of Effective Leadership

At its core, leadership accountability is about commitment, taking ownership of actions, decisions, and outcomes. When leaders approach accountability with curiosity and compassion, they create a culture where teams feel safe to own their actions and innovate without fear. A leader’s reflections on “What is your relationship with the word accountability?" can have a meaningful impact on their ability in leading business transformation. Organizational change can breed uncertainty and test the strongest and most resolute leadership team. Without clear accountability, employees may feel that leadership is not taking ownership of the transformation process creating a blame culture. Employees might shift responsibility for failures or challenges onto others, rather than collaborating to overcome obstacles. This behavior stifles innovation, teamwork, and the open communication needed for successful transformation. However, when leaders demonstrate accountability—by transparently communicating progress, acknowledging missteps, and honoring commitments they foster resilience, unlock opportunities for growth and build trust. This trust becomes the stabilizing force that keeps stakeholders engaged and invested in the transformation.

As you reflect on your relationship with accountability, I hope that you will start to see it as an evolving journey. Please be kind to yourself - your relationship with accountability can be fragile; it demands honesty, persistence and ownership of your actions and their outcomes. It can be easy to fall into the trap that accountability is something reserved for big moments, but with practice you just might find that it’s in the accumulation of small, consistent acts is where the growth and empowerment lies. To wrap up this issue of the insight igniter and spark some deeper learnings ask yourself:

“How does accountability show up in my daily actions, and how can I strengthen it?”
